Sreemangal, the tea capital of Bangladesh, is layered with tea and citrus gardens, and it is this beauty that gave rise to Grand Sultan. The client wanted a five-star resort where guests blend with nature in luxury; what began as an unobtrusive four-storey idea became, for viability, an eight-storey building — yet landscaping, a mini golf course and a small lake keep it seamlessly wedded to its setting. An oriental influence runs through interior and exterior alike, floral motifs on ceiling, wall, screen and carpet reinforcing a sense of grandeur, while the whole premise is lit without disturbing the eye. The heated pool is tucked strategically between three hills, and the service building sits behind the main block for smooth operation. At the top, Hilltop Kabana — an open, live-kitchen restaurant — cantilevers out over the tea garden, letting visitors float above it. Once a lemon garden, it is now a luxurious holiday destination.
