KSRM Shipyard Mosque — KSRM Mosque5

A contemporary mosque for the KSRM shipyard at Baroaulia — a sacred space of light and shadow, brick jaali and glass, conceived for meditation, purification and spiritual connection.

The brief

A mosque is a place of prostration, and Islamic architecture has evolved across regions into an eclectic fusion of forms. Unlike historic monumental mosques, the KSRM Mosque establishes a unique identity through transformed, contemporary forms. It was conceived on the fundamental idea that a sacred space should facilitate meditation, emotional purification and a direct spiritual connection with God. The articulation begins from essential mosque elements, focusing on function and symbolism rather than mere aesthetics, and turns on the dual nature of humankind — light and dark, expressed through brick jaali and solid walls. Glass is placed strategically to maximise natural light and ventilation from all sides, reinforcing the mosque’s purpose as a space of spiritual enlightenment. The result is a fresh, significantly transformed language for the mosque: simple yet distinctive, and aligned with contemporary needs.

Scope of work

Architectural design for a 9,600 sft mosque at the KSRM shipyard, Baroaulia — brick jaali and solid-wall interplay, glazed light and ventilation, a transformed contemporary mosque language.
