A commemorative promenade through a university campus — a linear plaza of reflecting pools, dated walls and lamp fields ending at a pair of standing slabs.
The challenge
A monument on a working campus has to hold commemoration and everyday student life on the same ground, in a strip of open lawn already crossed by roads and desire lines.
The approach
The scheme runs a low, stepped spine down the centre of the green: shallow reflecting pools, brick-paved terraces and concrete walls carrying the dates 1921, 1952 and 1971, each wall set at a change in level. Rows of candle holders line the route by night, and the axis ends at two split concrete slabs.
