A health complex of hospital wards, teaching floors and residential blocks, master planned around planted courtyards and water gardens — the whole street front held behind deep vertical louvre screens.
The challenge
Clinical units, lecture halls, libraries and staff housing all had to sit on one dense urban site without the wards losing daylight, quiet or a route to open ground.
The approach
The plan breaks the brief into separate blocks threaded along a spine, so burn, cardiac and diabetic units, cafeteria and library each get their own frontage onto a courtyard, pool or planted terrace. Vertical louvres and recessed panel walls shade the long elevations, and the ground plane opens under the buildings as a covered forecourt.
