A café unit in a shopping mall — its entire interior assembled from Dhaka’s own 1980s ephemera: film posters, cassette inlays, vinyl records and hand-painted rickshaw panels.
The challenge
A mall tenancy with a flat slab, columns in the middle of the floor and a glazed shopfront had to read as somewhere older and more particular than the mall around it.
The approach
Each column is clad top to bottom in yellow film-poster and cassette collage with vinyl records set into it. Dark timber beams cross the white soffit, a red poured floor separates the seating from the polished concrete of the entry, and a hopscotch grid in Bengali numerals is laid into it beside a rickshaw-painted counter on cartwheels.
