Maati_Affordable Housing

“Land is not man-made, land is a gift of nature. Why should land be owned by the individual for life? Why cannot land be owned by the society…”- Muzharul Islam (Bastu Kotha, p. 105)

With site appropriateness, accessibility our proposed affordable housing-“Maati,” aims to create a sustainable, inclusive, livable and equitable city creating a paradigm of a new Bengali urban vernacular. While it is intended to act as a city, the spaces themselves are promote informal meeting and playgrounds which holistically creates a learning environment.This is the principal aim and core of our design housing is:
a.) A spatial framework and condition that promotes a Bengali cultural camaraderie’s,
b.) policies social programs ensuring non-discriminatory financial and social sustainability.
Being in Bengal, the land of paradoxes: bhanga & gora, delta and estuary, and altering political landscape, a deep-rooted pluralism has become the distinct characteristic the cultural identity of Bangladesh. These versatile nature of Bengal relies essentially on five great elements of nature . Our design intervention catalyzes the elements “Pancha Bhuta,” which are: bhu , paani , agni , bayu , akash , as the power of place-making. Subsequently, the project constructs a community of Bengali urban village. This project engages the different faculties of human experience by using “land/earth ” and “water ” as the kernel site elements. This housing project produces the spaces of Bengali cultural landscape: such as ghat, uthan, verandah, bagans which offering connective community spaces.  The essential Bengali values and solaces of adda, festival (uthsab) such as Pohela Boishakh, Kite festival, is incorporate din the design which originated traditional moholla or para  concept.
