Incorporation of Islamic architectural elements were aimed for in our design by utilizing a geometric progression commonly found in window grills and floor mosaics – the eight-pointed star. To achieve this, two squares were rotated at a 45-degree angle, resulting in the formation of an eight-pointed star, which was used as a motif throughout the design. Flexibility in the design process was provided by the modular nature of the star form, which could be added or subtracted as required. The geometric progression was used in both plan and elevation, resulting in a modernized and abstract take on Islamic architecture. The vertical element was gracefully concluded by the triangular form of the column splitting in the middle, resembling hands in prayer to God. The column’s top could also be perceived as a piece of a dome on top of a mosque. Overall, the design effectively incorporated Islamic architectural elements while maintaining a contemporary aesthetic.
