A hilltop bungalow at Amtoli, planned as two brick wings set apart and offset — with an open paved court between them carrying the stair and the through-breeze.
The challenge
Building on an exposed hill crest in heavy monsoon country means the house takes sun and rain on every side, with no neighbouring structure to shelter it.
The approach
Broad hipped roofs oversail the walls on all four sides, throwing rain clear of the brickwork; perforated brick jaali fills the panels between the exposed concrete frame so air moves through the house while the sun is broken up. The two wings step down the contours, linked by an external stair, with the pool cut into the shaded slope.
